(1957) - Base Chapel - BPOE Staging Area! - (2002)

The above photos of the Base Chapel were taken 45 years apart. The one on the left was taken by Dick Hambidge in 1957, the one on the right was taken in 2002 by Chuck Cummins (former member of  SubUnit 2, Company "G", later Company "B", Marine Support Battalion.) when he was in Bremerhaven last June. Note the growth of the trees in 43 years! It also looks like the entrance has been changed.

Chuck said the base is now occupied by a couple of German Businesses and most of the buildings are deserted. The main gate is still manned by German civilians (working for the Zoll -- German customs).

Only a small contingent (5 men) of Army personnel are based there mainly for the handling of the import and export of POV's of American personnel stationed in the south. -- Sgt. Chuck Cummins, USMC
